This textbook has taught me why publishers can get away with charging ludicrous amounts for college textbooks. It's because our demand for them is perfectly inelastic!

The author does a good job of presenting the material. I like how the book will introduce an idea, show an accompanying graph to illustrate the idea, and then the author will fully explain every feature of the graph. He provides his rationale for every supposition made, so that there is no ambiguity in your understanding of each topic. However, I don't think the book is as objective as it should be.

I think the author included a fair bit of normative economics in here, when an intro to economics textbook should be comprised of positive statements, mostly.

Let students form their own ideas about economic theory -- just provide them with the facts. Its a pretty good read, simple, but can be boring if you're not keeping up with the concepts, it might seem like gibberish at that point. But, every chapter mostly refers back to the first 8 chapters or so and every chapter after that is really easy to understand because the author re-explains things and does a nice job to help you understand the dynamics and to speak and understand the language of economics which always seemed so foreign to me with interest, taxes, GDP, medicare, net worth, and all this jazz, but it makes more sense to me now.

Editorial Reviews Review "One of the reasons why we adopted the Mankiw text was because of its relevant concepts that students could really relate to. I would say to continue with this trend, and also be sure to use examples that relate to the current economic conditions that make sense to a beginner economics student.

I like the writing in the book--it's clear and exposits the ideas effectively. It covers topics that I want to cover, mostly in the order that I like to cover them. It's at the appropriate level for our students--not too difficult but not superficial either.

I also like the fact that this book is very closely integrated with the Aplia system, which I believe is an important learning tool.

Makes economics easy to understand.

Some of the other texts would take a lot of reading to explain an idea. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University.
