As a developer who wanted to understand how the internet works, I found this book to be a very good resource. It starts by giving a good overview of internetworking, a history, and the fundamental concepts make internetworking work. It goes on to describe each protocol that makes up internetworking in detail. It doesn't go into unnecessary low level detail, there's plenty of other resources for network administrators and experts.

It is very complete covering all important low level protocols and many important application level protocols. I had a few minor issues that prevented this book from being my bible for internetworking. One is that the book is relatively old. While most of the technology hasn't changed, how we perceive the internet has.

The way we conceptualize internetworking may have changed. The usage of certain protocols may have changed and thus the emphasis that should be placed on each protocol may be different.

Also, the book is large, over pages. There's enough information and detail that it could possibly be used as a reference book.

Because of these issues, I found myself skipping around and trying to figure out which sections of the book were important and essential to read. I was always afraid that I might miss something.

The book can be found free online, but as someone who loves books and likes to have physical copies, especially for books I appreciate, I was happy to buy it. Great, easy to read technical book. The book does cover all issues from a beginner but the common newbie stuff is marked as such and the author will tell you to skip those sections if you know certain info.

The biggest issue with the book is that because it is so old it still considers the OSI model as relevant and useful. Application wise there are some newer application protocols that are missing and some of the ones that were newish in the mids are not covered in detail.

However it is still the best book if you in-depth knowledge in a readable structure. I'm an IT professional who spends most of his time doing mundane tasks like virus removal, data backups and basic networking so a lot of the knowledge contained in this book may be things I never or rarely use in real life.

However, I'm always trying to push my knowledge further and I'm very picky about tracking down the right books to read and keep in my library, and this one is immediately in my library now. This book goes really in depth in parts and I'm very looking forward to digging in! You will get your money's worth. Maybe too much information, but I'd rather have more than less. No hesitation recommending this book.

A solid foundational tome and good reference. The application layer will go through a million interations - most are wheel reinventions and not particularly important. The more I have used this book over the last few months, the more I have come to appreciate it. I have found the subject extremely well organized and written about in beautiful clarity. Such clarity you don't often see in writing about such an extremely technical, dense subject.

Kozierok truly has a gift as an educator. The more I have worked with this book the more I see and appreciate his gift. It has been a great resource and I have learned enormous amounts about the subject. Very easy to understand and comprehensive to boot. Those are two qualities you quite rarely see in a technical guide. Would agree with many of the positive reviews here. It is hard to believe that just one person wrote this book. Equally amazing is how good it is. The site contains over 1, pages, and doing this severely degrades server performance, making it difficult for others to use the site.

For this reason, you risk having your access to the site blocked by an automatic script if you try to do this. I would also appreciate it if those who are using the Guide extensively for commercial purposes would license it. Quick navigation to subsections and regular topics in this section.
