The story itself is somewhat familiar for long time Discworld fans with the antagonist being the Queen of the Elves invading, but Pratchett changes things up with the use of dreams and the conflict as seen from a nine-year old. The cameo appearance of Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg at the end, sets up further adventures of Tiffany and connects her subseries with the Witches subseries with the hopes of seeing favorite characters in future books.

The second young adult and first Tiffany subseries book of the Discworld canon is a fantastic book; "The Wee Free Men" gives someone new for long time fans while introducing older characters for younger new readers. Although, like most of Pratchett's books, it could have used a good editor.

I'm not sure of Pratchett's writing style--was he a pantzer? Because MEN seems to meander a bit, and he didn't seem to either be able to, or want to, end it. Just when you think it's over But all of this aside, there are few, if any, authors who can create such wonderful characters as the Nac Mac Feegles. They are, in a word, brilliant--funny, courageous, fiercely loyal, and lovingly unintelligent. Protagonist, Tiffany Aching, is well-drawn as well, but it is the Feegles who steal the show.

Thus, if you judge by the emotional outpourings over their deaths, the greatest writers of recent times were Pratchett and Ray Bradbury.

Yet they were true titans of the novel. Their books, like all great books, can change your life, your beliefs, your perceptions. Everyone reads trash sometimes, but why are we now pretending, as a culture, that it is the same thing as literature?

The two are utterly different. Actual literature may be harder to get to grips with than a Discworld novel, but it is more worth the effort.

By dissolving the difference between serious and light reading, our culture is justifying mental laziness and robbing readers of the true delights of ambitious fiction. Because life really is too short to waste on ordinary potboilers. I am not saying this as a complacent book snob who claims to have read everything.

On the contrary, I am crushed by how many books I have not read.
