I usually rely on books to learn new technologies because I believe given the right book, I can teach myself anything. I just could not find a decent enough book. The example codes in most books are already deprecated.
Good luck trying to learn a challenging technology in theory only. Then I purchased this book. Unlike most books that rely on one comprehensive example whereas if any part of the code doesn't work you are up the creek, this book provides dozens of discrete examples.
They all work. If you are stuck with one, just move on to the next one. You can't do that with one comprehensive example. If you are stuck, you are stuck. But in addition to dozens of examples on each topic, this book also provides four comprehensive examples at the end, two of which I have fully implemented without a single glitch.
Another strong point of this book is that it delves into each technology of the MEAN stack with great depth. Other books are more focused on the connectivity of the various technologies of the stack how they work together -- and pay superficial attention to teaching those technologies.
I can't thank this author sufficiently for allaying my frustration and putting me on the path to learning MEAN. One person found this helpful. This book was not very well edited. It's filled with typos that can confuse a newbie like me. However, it took a practical approach to teaching how to do node and angular end-to-end.
I skipped the MongoDB parts. I like Mongo, but I'm developing with a legacy MySql database on the back end so I used that instead. Dayley's examples were simple but not simplistic. So many teachers of web technologies like to take you through the weeds of CSS and complex layout just so their examples are pretty.
His are not pretty, but they are gorgeously educational. Also, this book is a little dated. Some of the examples show deprecated features. That's not the author's fault--he needs to get paid to bring it up to date. This book is much better than I expected. Most books that cover multiple libraries usually skim over the main functionally of each component. I was surprised to discover that this is a pretty deep dive into each of the MEAN components.
Just Mercy: A story of Justice and Redemption
The author provides numerous examples that are short but still prove the point being made. All the examples are available via GitHub and I ran each example as I followed along in the book. First, all the examples worked correctly! That's a first for me. Second, I could step though the code a line at a time to see exactly what was happening I used Visual Studio with the node plugin. Running the examples takes a little longer but really drives home the point. I had many ah-ha's while working though this book.
If you want a LOB application from beginning to end which would double the size then this isn't the book for you. But if you want to get a fairly deep look into how each MEAN component works then this is it.
