Most people are conditioned to believe that we need to focus on improving our areas of weakness in order to grow, both personally and professionally. However, the opposite is actually true. You need to focus on where you are already strong, and continue to build upon and enhance those skills. It is then imperative to direct your work days so that most tasks being performed I absolutely loved this book! The book provides step-by-step processes for determining your strengths and how to maximize them on the job, as well as getting buy-in from your boss and coworkers. I read it as part of a book club for work - the discussions we ended up having were excellent but the book itself was just okay.
It starts off sounding extremely promising and in theory most of it is very promising. It can be very challenging to follow everything the book suggests to do but the least you can do is try and ask. I feel that I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I have put myself in place to use them as often as possible. I think this is a great book for someone that may be looking for a life change, or isnt happy with their current situation, which would move it to that 4 spot.

It is a mediocre book with highly valuable information if you are willing to dig through the business speak and find it. As such, reading it in a group worked well. At our meetings, we were able to weed out the valuable information. The theme of this book is that people do best when they focus on their strengths.
This flies in the face of much popular wisdom which says that you should work to improve in your weakest areas. Instead, the author I read this books as part of a reading group at work. Instead, the authors of this book are of the opinion that focusing on your weaknesses will, at best, bring you up to mediocre. Focusing on those areas where you have natural talent and passion will bring success.
They say that successful teams are balanced, but successful individuals invest in developing their unique talents.
This book contains a six step system for discovering and developing your strengths. Buckingham excels at the art of business babble, which makes this book something of a chore to read. However, the system itself is useful. At a high level, the steps in this system are: Attitude realignment: Stop believing the myth that you should work on improving your weaknesses.
I wouldn't really call this a step, but whatever.
Strength discovery: Spend a week noting which activities you love and loathe and turn those into strengths statements. A strength is a specific activity that makes you feel strong. For example, "I evaluate an already defined set of options against a set of well defined criteria" is a strength.
The first one defines specific preconditions that must be met before the strength can apply: Use your strengths: Find more way to apply these strengths in your job. Stop your weaknesses: Find ways to spend less time on the activities you loathe. Talk about it: Talk to your manager about how you can use your strengths to improve the team.
Then, once you have demonstrated that you're not just trying to get out of work, talk to your manager about those things which drain you and figure out how to spend less time on them or change them to be more in line with your strengths. Build strong habits: Set up a structure which will encourage you to build up your strengths every week. Also, reevaluate your strengths periodically; they will change as your role and interests change. Our reading group focused mostly on the second step: I found this to be one of the most useful parts of the whole reading group.
Just by spending a week being conscious of what I do and do not like, I gained a lot of insight into my work day. The exercise of turning those very specific statements into strengths statements that were general enough to be applicable from week to week without being so general as to be meaningless helped me to figure out why I enjoyed the activities that I enjoyed. That said, I have been having a hard time focusing on really putting my strengths into practice.
I am pretty good at noticing when I am using one of my strengths, but it takes time to figure out how I can spend more time using my strengths. I have not yet taken the time to sit down and do this. Like any program, the real value is proportional to the amount of time you are willing to put into it.
The answers the books give you are just a start.

Buckingham begins by having readers take the Strengths Engagement Survey SET , to gauge the present involvement of their strengths in their job completed online with a password included on the book jacket.

Step Four focuses on stopping your weaknesses. Step Five teaches you how to speak up with your superiors to grow your strengths and limit your weaknesses, including some specific language and steps to introduce and promote this concept without undermining your career.
Finally, Step Six introduces practical advice on building strong habits to keep the momentum going. Buckingham provides 5 steps keyed to the calendar to accomplish this. This interesting and practical book closes with some insights for the manager who wishes to develop the strengths of the team, as well as providing answers for the typical questions that come up in implementing the process. I read this one for work, as it had been recommended to us by our managers. It is therefore difficult for me to review the book without thinking of work, and this has likely influenced my review.
There is a number of interesting ideas in this book, and Buckingham challenges some well-worn ideas about people and how they work and grow in a manner that is successful. His base idea is that we will grow much more by focusing on our strengths and nurturing them than we will by trying to improve our we I read this one for work, as it had been recommended to us by our managers.

The challenge therefore, is to find ways within our workplace to focus on our areas of strength. All of this is sound reasoning. However, it seems to neglect that in many work environments, there are duties and situations which are simply unavoidable.
If, for instance, attending staff meeting because of the bickering that happens there is one of the things that I dislike abut my job, and that drains my energy, well Buckingham does not offer a solution for this. I understand that no one book can be the Solution to All Things, but like many books of this type, "Go Put Your Strengths to Work" takes a tone of purporting to do just that. There will be amazing changes in your life, and if there isn't, well then you're simply not doing it right.
The other bothersome part of the book is the blatant attempts to sell the author's other materials "go watch our video Certainly, if you've purchased the book brand-new, you can do some of these things though the book implies that there are further materials available on the website, for a fee , as the book includes a code for access by one person only - if you've borrowed the book from a library, or purchased it second-hand, you're out of luck.
It feels manipulative, and a money-grab though clever on the part of the author, I suppose. Perhaps I just haven't given the book's suggestions enough of a chance to make a difference in my workplace. Perhaps it will be too difficult to do so unless all of my co-workers and management are on-board.
Perhaps my work environment is simply far too different from the office-type audience that Buckingham is writing for - I certainly cannot see this being of value in a factory, on the line!

But by working on your weaknesses, you might get some progress, but more likely you will be burned out and miserable. So in this book you go through a series of exercises to help you find your strengths then start making time in your life to use them. I am currently in Chapter four. A book to accompany the Strength Finder series. Buckingham works through solid examples here and helps the reader to understand more about how to be effective as work. At the same time getting clearer on more practical action steps would be great. Overall decent book to read. As I mentioned in my previous review of Mojo, I inadvertently read a series of books which all follow similar themes with their own unique approach.
Those themes are all about strengths, satisfaction, and energy. All of these things are vital to our work and personal lives if we intend to be happy, learn, and continue to grow. Unlike Mojo, this book offers a more structured and scientific approach to identifying and making use of your strengths.
There are several tools available to profile and discover strengths, such as the Clifton Strength Finder. Of course once you clearly understand your strengths, the goal is to use strategies to conduct your work in a way that plays to your strengths and pushes back on your weaknesses. A few such strategies are explaining to colleagues what you are doing and asking for help, or to partner with someone who has opposite strengths to yours allowing you to trade work and each perform tasks that align with your strengths.
The book contains many more examples and checklists to guide the reader through the process of identifying strengths and playing to them. Sometimes as I read I come across one statement that really sticks with me, in this book it was this — a weakness is something that regardless of how well you do it still produces negative emotions. This is so true, you can be really good at something yet hate doing it.
Follow this line of thinking through and you can see how people wind up being given tasks that take energy from them because they have a reputation for being good at those things. As a result, that type of work keeps coming their way and can lead to becoming and staying unhappy in a job. Skills are learned. Knowledge is learned. What does a strength feel like? Your feelings reveal your strengths.
When I'm doing an activity that strengthens me I am thinking This is fun! I could do this forever! This is my calling! This is perfect for me. I am feeling Powerful, passionate, euphoric, enthusiastic, natural, authentic, smooth, confident. I want to Learn more about it. Find role models and people I can learn from. Look for people that are really good at it. When I'm doing an activity that weakens me I am thinking I hate it when I have to do this.
Will this ever end? This is taking forever. Thank goodness this is nearly over. Must I? Frustrated, fragmented, disjointed, awkward, drained, despondent, bored, distracted. Avoid having to do it again. Get someone else to do it. Shove it to the side of my desk and ignore it. Do anything else instead. The book outlines in great detail how to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and what to do about them. I started to try Steps out of the 6 steps as I read the book. And that was my biggest takeaway from the book - the concept that strengths and weaknesses should be specific and activity-based.
